A look at the Texas Revolution

 



The Texas Revolution was a conflict between Mexico and the Republic of Texas that lasted from 1835 to 1836. The war resulted in the independence of Texas from Mexico and its eventual annexation by the United States.

There were many causes of the Texas Revolution. One of the most important was the issue of slavery. Mexico had abolished slavery in 1829, but many of the settlers in Texas were slave owners. They were concerned that Mexico would eventually try to enforce its abolition laws in Texas.

Another cause of the revolution was the issue of representation. Texas had a large population, but it had very few representatives in the Mexican government. This made it difficult for Texans to have their voices heard in Mexico City.

Finally, many Texans were simply unhappy with the Mexican government. They felt that it was corrupt and inefficient. They also resented the fact that Mexico was trying to impose its culture and laws on Texas.

The Texas Revolution began in October 1835, when a group of Texans attacked the Mexican garrison at Gonzales. The Texans were victorious, and they soon captured the city of San Antonio. In February 1836, the Texans defeated a Mexican army at the Battle of San Jacinto. This victory effectively ended the war, and Texas declared its independence.

The Texas Revolution had a number of legacies. First, it led to the creation of the Republic of Texas. The Republic of Texas existed for nine years before it was annexed by the United States in 1845. Second, the Texas Revolution helped to fuel the sectional tensions that led to the American Civil War. Many of the leaders of the Texas Revolution were slave owners, and they were determined to protect their right to own slaves. Third, the Texas Revolution helped to shape the identity of Texas. Texans came to see themselves as a people who were independent and self-reliant. They also developed a strong sense of pride in their state's history.
